Courtyard Remodel in Tulsa: A Zen Garden Transformation

We are thrilled to share the details of our latest project—a stunning courtyard remodel in Tulsa that embodies the tranquility and elegance of a Zen Garden with Japanese Garden themes. Our clients envisioned a serene, low-maintenance space that would bring a sense of calm and beauty to their home. We are honored to have brought this vision to life.

Project Overview

For this project, we began by removing the existing mulch and many of the plants. While we aimed to reuse as much as possible, a significant revamp was necessary to achieve the desired Zen Garden feel. Our clients already had several beautiful pieces, including a statue of a Japanese farmhouse, metal gate wall art, numerous planters, and some great metal trellises.

Landscaping and Design

To create a harmonious and low-maintenance landscape, we opted for rock instead of mulch. Different areas of the courtyard were defined using various sizes of rocks and pea gravel. Larger boulders were strategically placed to provide ambiance and symbolize steps, as well as a waterfall flowing into a symbolic dry creek bed.

Key elements of the landscaping included:

  • Wisteria: Added to the trellises, providing a lush, cascading greenery.
  • Dwarf Mugho Pines: Selected for their compact size and aesthetic appeal.
  • Moss: Planted around the stepstones, enhancing the natural look.
  • Shin Deshojo Japanese Maple: A beautiful addition that perfectly complements the Zen Garden theme.

Art and Sentimental Pieces

We made sure to incorporate our clients’ existing art pieces that held significant sentimental value. The beautiful gate, now a prominent feature in the courtyard, has a symbolic stone path leading up to it. Each area of the courtyard has a different focus, creating little niches of meaning throughout the space. Hidden within the garden is a pagoda where their beloved lilies are now taking root.

Irrigation and Lighting

To ensure the new plantings thrive, we revamped the irrigation system. Additionally, we installed low-voltage lighting using a VOLT system, a choice based on many years of experience and the superior quality and warranty offered by VOLT. This system allows us to select the exact bulb for each project and easily replace the bulb without needing to replace the entire unit. We continue to use LED bulbs for their efficiency and longevity.

Conclusion

While courtyards are uncommon in the Tulsa area, many homeowners seek low-maintenance landscaping options to keep their homes fresh and inviting. We are grateful to our clients for trusting us to transform their space into a serene and beautiful courtyard.

Stay tuned for more transformations and updates on our projects!
