Sometimes the best way to get more out of your home isn’t changing what you already have — it’s creating the space your family actually needs.

For these Owasso homeowners, that meant expanding the upstairs to create a larger, more comfortable space that could function as a mother-in-law suite, complete with a private ensuite bathroom and additional storage.

The area previously held a bed, but the family needed more room, more privacy and a space that felt intentional rather than simply somewhere to sleep.

Creating More Space for Multigenerational Living

Phase I of this Owasso home addition focused on creating the additional square footage and functionality the family needed.

The finished space included a significantly larger bedroom and living area, a new private ensuite bathroom, and new access to the attic for additional storage.

Together, those changes created a much more comfortable and independent area within the home while also making better use of the available upstairs space.

There were still a couple of areas where built-ins made sense, but the homeowners weren’t quite ready to decide exactly what they wanted.

Rather than adding something simply because there was room for it, they chose to live in the new space for a while first.

They Lived in the Space — Then Called Us Back for Phase II

After having some time to actually use the new mother-in-law suite, the homeowners had a much better idea of what would make the space work for them.

When they were ready, they called us back for Phase II.

This time, we added custom built-ins designed around how the room was actually being used.

One area became concealed built-in storage with multiple drawers while maintaining a clean, finished appearance when closed. Another became a custom desk area with cabinetry and open shelving.

Instead of simply filling empty walls, the new built-ins gave those areas a purpose while adding storage and functionality without taking away from the openness of the room.

Why Waiting on the Built-Ins Made Sense

Remodeling doesn’t always mean making every decision at once.

In this case, waiting gave the homeowners an opportunity to see how they naturally used the new space before deciding what those remaining areas should become.

By the time we returned for Phase II, there wasn’t much guessing involved. They knew what they needed, and we could build around it.

Sometimes living in a new space for a while leads to a better final design.

Creating a Mother-in-Law Suite Without Leaving Home

For families who need additional space for a parent, adult child or extended family member, an in-law suite or home addition can provide more room and privacy without requiring everyone to live in completely separate homes.

Depending on the existing home and the needs of the family, that might mean adding a bedroom, private bathroom, living area, additional storage or custom features designed specifically for the person who will use the space.

For this Owasso home, expanding the upstairs created the additional living space and privacy the family needed while allowing them to stay in the home they already loved.

And with the addition of attic access and the Phase II built-ins, they gained quite a bit of useful storage along the way.
